What to Highlight in a Business Consultant Resume

Ok, so there’s good news and bad news. The bad news: According to HR statistic reports, recruiters only spend 7 seconds scanning your resume. The good news: if you write your resume in the correct format, they will read it for the full 7 seconds and maybe even get you an interview. How, you ask?

Step 1: Utilize the reverse chronological format for the resume. It’s a great format for any level of Management Consultant. Give the recruiter EVIDENCE that you’ll smash your job responsibilities and that you just love a good challenge to keep you on your toes. All that stuff is music to recruiters’ ears.  

Step 2: Convince the recruiters you’re the best person for the position. Simply modify your resume by choosing the relevant responsibilities from the list below and include your accomplishments. This will put you in the best positioned to get hired. 

Step 3: Then you must explain the type of business consulting experience you have to offer the employer. Business consultants commonly add value in five main areas of business:

Management and strategy

Qualified consultants must possess a solid knowledge of your specific market and bring the best practices from that type of industry (or even other industries) to the company. 


Explain your passion for improving the quality and proficiency of production processes. Operations consultants assist companies in creating and implementing new ways of doing just that. Some are specialized in business process re-engineering, maintaining the quality, and re-engineering processes to decrease steps and costs. 


This area of consulting is growing quickly due to the demands of modern technology impacting middle-market companies daily. An IT consultant improves IT system capabilities and makes IT more capable of meeting internal and external customers' fluid needs.


These guys focus on developing strategies for compensation that line up with your big-picture business goals and training. They help to build people in areas like business communication and leadership. 


Your capabilities to offer a creative spark to boost a company’s executive management who may have potentially run out of new ideas will make you invaluable to the recruiters.

Business Consultant Career Summary & Objectives

Ladies and gents, we can’t stress enough how important it is that you mold each career summary or career objective to every job you apply for. This sounds like more effort, and it sort of is, but the rewards will make sense if you think of it as quality over quantity. Tailoring your career summary may result in fewer application attempts from your side due to the way your resume is written up, ending in more interviews. 

A summary statement isn’t the same as an objective statement. If you give an objective at the beginning of the resume, emphasize what you aim to bring to the table (these are best for recent graduates, though). The summary should consist of three concise statements. Firstly, who you are: a seasoned consultant. Next, what can you contribute to the potential organization’s general aims? The thing that distinguishes a Career Summary from a Career Objective is TIME. The summary highlights what you have already done. Objectives Explain what you intend to do.

The format should look something like this:

  • First sentence should have a commanding adjective used to describe yourself regarding your current position and experience level. 
  • Next, have two or three dominant technical proficiencies and the industry section where you’ve received a majority of your experience. 
  • Finish up with a sentence about your qualifications/ credentials. 

Note: your career summary, and resume, must be written in the third person. Forego me, myself, and Is. 

Career objectives must have your ambitions and goals. Why do you want to work for that specific company, and how do you plan to add value to their team? When you answer these questions, put in any core skills or experiences that highlight why you’ll be invaluable in that particular job.

Summary example 1

“Results-driven business consultant with 12+ years’ experience managing operations, projects, and business services. Strong leadership skills capable of refining processes, improving productivity, and resolving critical business problems timeously. Broad experience directing multi-million business operations with full budget, financial, profit, and loss responsibility.”

Summary example 2

“A pioneering, self-motivated, and highly enthusiastic business consultant with proven abilities to recognize and capitalize on business opportunities. Previously achieved swift progression in major projects from the planning stage to implementing and completion.  Currently looking for a suitable business consultant opening with a company that is innovative and ambitious.”

Summary example 3

“Intellectually curious individual with a tremendously creative and unique mind, interested in the Business Consultant position in (Insert Company Name). Offering a Master’s degree in Marketing Management, 9+ years’ management experience, exceptional planning, research skills, brilliant customer service orientation, top networking, presentation, communication, and abilities.”

Employment History & Examples 

This is the make-or-break section in your resume. In this section, you must stick to concise, professional sentences and explanations when describing your daily responsibilities. You can show your creative flair in other parts of the resume.  

The best layout to use here would be the reverse chronological order format. You must list your employment length, job title, name of the company, and then a bullet list of job obligations:

Highlight Your Accomplishments

In this section, you’ll need to think about all the skills you possess and then describe them using power verbs and numerical values associated with statements about projects of which you are most proud, awards won, or honors received, and recommendations from clients and managers.

Not everyone has a brain that likes working with facts and figures, but quantifying your statements is critical to recruiters in this section. They need accurate data about your achievements.

This is your self-promotion section, establishing a unique personal brand. 

You must bolster this brand with your portfolio links from your website (if you have), Pinterest, or Instagram.  

Guys, it’s tempting to underplay this section. PLEASE DON’T. Quantification is vital so put in those numerical values.

Below are examples of what NOT TO DO. Avoid boring statements, simply paraphrasing your job obligations or using words like increased, excellent, reduced, and delivered. They mean jack without metrics.

Let’s be real here, and you didn’t enjoy reading that, did you? Ok, now look below. These ones have metrics. You decide which is better:

  • Managed large-scale project for Fortune 500 company, supervising a team of 50 engineering, finance, and accounting staff members.
  • Developed a tactical plan to implement new processes in materials production, resulting in increased production volumes while slashing supply costs by 46%.
  • Guided marketing program, shifting brand image, and increasing high- end luxury market share. Project success led to 58% increase in sales revenue.
  • Consulted with board members, executives, and project managers for company expansion enterprise that led to $156M in revenue increases, increasing profit margins by 39%.

Education Section & Examples

You may have heard that skills and experience count more than the education you received. In this case, you’re wrong. Consulting has its own rule book. Major consulting companies only want the best players in their game. Those players with deep knowledge. 

If you happened to attend the target university (Stanford, Harvard, Cambridge, etc.), the education section in your resume would turn heads. 

Post-school academic achievements like degrees, diplomas, online courses, or certifications, must be included in your resume. They will highlight your exceptional theoretical foundation and ability for continuous learning from the recruiters. 

The education details must be specific: qualification, location, institution, and end date all in one line. If you achieved results with honors/ cum laude and if your GPA score is good (above 3.4), add these in. Graduates with little/no work experience must include major subjects/ course curriculum topics.

What to Write in Your Resume Skills Section

Utilizing specific keywords is the key to sliding your resume through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Look at the job ad carefully and use the precise words and phrases they used in the ad to guarantee your resume makes it through the ATS to the recruiters' desk. 

For instance, if the job ad states management is looking for a consultant with “proven collaboration skills,” copy and paste that phrase and use it as is. No synonyms, nothing. 

Make sure you have the evidence to back up the facts in your skills section.

Firstly, “I know Excel” isn’t going to cut it. Everyone applying for the job you want knows Excel. Secondly, the skills you put in your resume are dependent on the field you’re in. 

If you’re writing a resume for an IT business consultant or leasing business consultant job, you’ll need to showcase a different skill set for each. Take a look at the job offer again and think of work-related skills (technical and soft skills).

Using a technical skills matrix achieves two essential goals:

  1. Beating the applicant tracking systems as your core proficiencies are phrased exactly like the ones stated in the job ad. 
  2. Provides recruiters with a tidy format for viewing your main technical abilities.
