What to Highlight in Your Resume

There are a few key things that employers need to know about your background and skills in order to determine if you are what they are looking for.

As a Copywriter, your job is essentially to write texts which convince audiences to buy what you’re selling. This can be through website content, emails, newsletters, sales pages, blogs, articles, or press releases. You can also specialize in writing UI/UX copy which must embody the company’s brand voice while guiding the customer during their interaction with a product. There are many paths a Copywriter can take, so be sure to define your area of expertise.

Aside from writing, employers want to hire someone with a real passion for user-centered copy. If you don’t know who you’re writing for then your copy won’t “speak” to anyone. Research is a huge component of copywriting, so always mention how you collected data, interviewed users, or devised a content strategy tailored to a specific audience.

Lastly, make sure to showcase your proficiency in communication. As a Copywriter, you’ll likely be working with marketing and design teams. You’ll also be in contact with the client while presenting your work or ideas. This ability for communication is also important regarding online tools, such as Slack or other team productivity software companies use to keep everyone in sync. So if you’re experienced with a particular set of tools, include them in your resume.

How to Write a Copywriter

Hiring managers don’t have time to read every word on your resume. The trick is to put the most important information first to capture their interest. If you show your value early on, they’ll most likely pay attention to the rest of your resume.

When looking at your resume, the first thing they will see is your career objective. This is where the key information about yourself should be.
Start it off with your years of experience as a Copywriter and the main duties you perform. When deciding what duties to add, use the job description as your guide. For instance, if the job you are applying to emphasizes expertise in creating compelling landing page copy, mention this in your objective. Use the same words and phrases they do to make it sound like you were born for the job.

Next, add a line that showcases any outstanding qualities that will help the company. A hiring manager would be interested to know if you have proven experience increasing sales conversions, defining brand guidelines, or building mailing lists. It’s important to note that these qualities should be proven in the professional experience section.

Lastly, close with bonus skills, certifications, or even a sentence that reinforces the value you can offer them if they were to hire you.

“User-focused Copywriter with 3 years experience in crafting clear copy that sells Fashion products. Exceptional attention to detail and a clear understanding of social media strategy. Passion for creating copy that delights customers and dismays competitors. Proficient in Word and Excel, HubSpot and WordPress.”

Copywriter Responsibilities

These are the general responsibilities of a Copywriter that you should include in your employment history:

  • Researching audience needs, pain points, and objections for a comprehensive copy.
  • Understanding business goals, branding, SEO, and messaging guidelines.
  • Crafting effective copy for websites, apps, and all types of marketing materials.
  • Providing creative and innovative solutions which offer tangible results.
  • Ensuring the brand voice is reflected across all copy.
  • Editing and proofreading all copy to ensure correct grammar and quality content throughout.
  • Presenting ideas and/or copy to clients along with succinct arguments to support content decisions.
  • Monitoring KPIs and rewriting copy as needed to achieve or exceed business goals.

The Additional Skills Section

In a Copywriter resume, a lot of emphasis will be put on the additional skills section. This is a great place to showcase your soft skills which can give you the advantage over your competition.

Copywriters with a talent for user testing, data reporting, and giving presentations are seen as valuable additions to the company. (If you are a highly-experienced applicant, you may want to consider including a Qualifications Summary on your resume instead.)

Quantifying Your Resume

Employers love measurable statistics because it makes your experience more impactful. Here are a few numbers you can include in your resume:

  • How much did sales increase thanks to your copy?
  • How many clients became repeat clientele after your work?
  • How many people subscribed to the mailing list?
  • How many subscribers opened the emails you sent?

The Importance of Soft Skills

For Copywriters, soft skills are just as important as experience. Your role is to integrate the user’s needs, client expectations, and business goals into a clear, compelling copy. This means you must be naturally collaborative with the ability to guide the strategic content creation and effectively communicate your ideas. To show employers that you have the soft skills they are looking for, try to incorporate these into your profile, key skills, and cover letter sections:

  • Empathetic
  • Creative
  • Analytical
  • Persuasive
  • Strong communication skills
